If I mess with my jaw to sooth the pain, could I damage it more?

mechanical back pain
I’ve recently been having pain from TMJD (I’m assuming) and everything I’ve read about it says to massage the area or do mechanical exercises to sooth it. I am not a pill popper, so I would not be at all happy with taking pain pills for the rest of my life. I’d much rather deal with the pain.

What I’m asking is could I damage the joint even more from doing these exercises? They don’t seem to work very well for me, and having someone stronger than me massage the joint brings only like 10 minutes of relief.

By the way, I WOULD already have gone to the dentist, but I don’t have the money, and I don’t have my own medical insurance yet (I just turned 18 and I’m in college).
It’s not devastating pain or anything like that. I can still go about my daily life. It doesn’t hurt to chew or speak, but I cannot open my mouth enough to fit a grape without stressing the jaw joint and causing pain. I sometimes force it open to where it pops, but the tightness does not go away.
