20 weeks pregnant with extreme lower back pain and it is shooting down the back of my right thigh?

I have always been really petite and I have already gained 20 pounds with my pregnancy. For the past two weeks or so I have been having extreme lower back pain and it has been shooting down the back of my right thigh. I was wondering if any of you have experienced this before. My mom says the baby could be putting pressure on my cyatic nerve. Others say it could just be the strain of the extra 20 pounds on my tiny little frame. I have a Dr.’s appt. Monday but any suggestions for relief or reassurance that this is normal would be helpful. Thank you
